Glossary · Speech and language therapy, SALT

SLT

Therapy for communication — understanding, expression, speech sounds, and the social use of language. Functional communication comes before clarity of speech, in that order.

What this means for your child

Why SLT matters.

The order matters more than parents are usually told. A child who can make themselves understood imperfectly is in a much better position than one working on precise sounds while still unable to ask for what they need.

It is also the therapy where home carry-over does the most work. Two or three short, specific things practised daily in ordinary conversation will generally beat a weekly session with nothing in between.

Worth asking

Questions that get a real answer

  • Are we working on being understood, or on sounding clear?
  • What should we be doing at home daily?
  • What are the separate receptive and expressive targets?

Ask these of anyone, including us. What you are listening for is not the right answer — it is whether the answer is specific enough to be wrong.

If a report still doesn't make sense

Send it to us and we'll translate it.

Any report, from any provider, including ones we have nothing to do with. We will tell you in plain English what it says, what it recommends, and which parts are actually supported by the evidence in it. No charge, and it does not make you a client.
